Photography and tourism are closely intertwined even though tourism predates the former by a hefty margin. However, the two are inextricably linked today with photography serving tourism as advertisement, commodity, and memento; while tourism serves photography as subvention, validation, and structuring activity. In Maldives too, photography plays a vital role in promoting the country as a beautiful tourist destination. As a result – and in no small part directly as a result of the introduction of affordable digital cameras which allowed amateurs to experiment and showcase their talent to the world on the internet – the number of talented local photographers gaining popularity and recognition, both locally and internationally, has increased significantly in the last couple of years. Maldives Traveller’s Mohamed Hursheed sat down for a quick Q&A session with Ali Nishan (more readily recognized by his signature nickname, Millzero), one of the most well-known local photographers working in the Maldives today.
